Tips for Writing Your Business Executive Profile

Climbing a Pile of FilesThe profile section of your business executive resume is, perhaps, the most important part. How can it be more important than the listing of positions held or your pages of recommendations? Easy! The profile comes first on the page, and if it isn’t good, no hiring manager will read past it!

Composing that profile is a tricky business. You want to laud your accomplishments, yet not go over the top. You want to sound interesting, but not too diverse in your interests. Lets look at a few important tips for making your resume profile section a cut above the other candidates.

  • Always focus on concrete achievements. Do not fill your resume profile with adjectives such as “hard working” , “creative”, or “organized.” These do sound like wonderful traits, but a hiring manager wants to know how you have proven that you have these traits. Use the profile section to list accomplishments, not personality traits.
  • Repeat information. Yes, it is okay to repeat information on a resume, especially in the profile section. Think of the profile section as a teaser. If your resume were a movie, the profile would be the synopsis. Noting accomplishments in the profile will get managers to read further, then see that accomplishment again, in more detail, in another listing, thus driving the point home.
  • Use sentence fragments. It is resume-writing style to use sentence fragments. That’s right, after all that time you have taken to learn to express yourself with proper grammar, the most important document of your career doesn’t even require it. In a resume, you have a lot of information to cram into one or two small pages, so skimp on words where you can, as long as the statement makes sense.
  • Never abbreviate! Not even state or country names. Abbreviations cause the reader to pause, and you don’t want that. You want the whole document to flow smoothly without any misunderstandings or pauses.
