Three Hiring Tips for Small Business Owners
A big part of being a small business owner is hiring. But let’s face it, nobody you hire is going to be just like you. Your employees won’t think like you, act like you, or talk like you. Yet they’ll have to do your work and help you run your business. Think of this as a good thing. After all, they should bring attributes of their own to the business and they may even be better than you at some things. But knowing that each person has unique attributes doesn’t really make it easier to choose from the large pools of applicants that exist. Once you have hired an employee, it can be troublesome and difficult to get rid of him or her if it doesn’t work out, so try to hire right the first time. Here are three tips for becoming a great hiring manager as well as a small business owner:
- Know exactly what you expect from the employee. Be perfectly clear about it up front. If it involves long hours with low pay, try to emphasize some positive aspect, such as the experience the employee will gain. But don’t lie. If you are not clear about your expectations up front, it is your own fault if the employee does not fulfill them.
- Be honest about your style of work and management. If you like to look over your employee’s shoulder all day, don’t advertise for an “independent minded person.” Find the right person to fit into your style of management.
- Realize that hiring takes time. Don’t hire the first person that applies, but by the same token, if you find the right person, hire him or her right away. Don’t give the potential employee time to go on other interviews and find something else.
