There is a Great Deal to Know about Business Executive Networking
Business networking has been proven to be one of the best ways to find a good job, but there are so many misperceptions about networking and how to achieve it, that executives or would-be executives would do well to take note of some of the networking myths and mistakes that are out there these days. Of course you want to meet important people, but how you do it and how you present yourself are crucial. If you do it wrong, you could make a bad impression, which would be worse than making no impression at all!
The first no-no is to directly ask about job openings. You want your connections to get to know you and like you and then come to you with job information. Always make it seem like it was the contact’s idea, not yours. You don’t want to be seen as someone who is needy, after all. You want to appear self assured, so never ask directly for a job.
Many networkers meet influential executives and develop great relationships with them, all to no avail. That is because they didn’t do their research first. Good research will allow you to evaluate a company and predetermine whether or not jobs are available, and if so, in what department. Then you can go out and network, knowing exactly who to meet!
There are so many important things to know about how to network effectively, that the subject is worthy of study. So if you are looking or a job or considering networking simply to make useful contacts for other endeavors, study the art of networking. It isn’t as easy as it appears!
