Ten Tips for Building Your Business Executive Network
For business executives, networking is key. Creating a reliable web of individuals that are willing to work with you and share key information and connections can sometimes be more valuable than all the business deals and mergers and “formal” arrangements in the world. But how do you build that essential network? It is difficult and time consuming, but less so if you know these ten networking tips.
- Develop an action plan. Know your goals and how you plan to achieve them, step by step.
- Prepare your self-marketing message. Know how you want to be perceived and put your best foot forward.
- Gather valuable information. Do research to determine which companies you are interested in.
- Think connectivity. Connect with businesses and individuals that are connected with other important players.
- Meet you contacts where they go. If your contacts are members of certain associations or attend certain conventions, go to them and make the connections there.
- Plan for a specific outcome. Set your desired results for each encounter, such as a lead, a contact name, or specific information.
- Know the right method of approach. Always be polite, unselfish, and a great listener.
- Network with other executives of similar competencies. It can be useful to join email lists and executive associations.
- Increase your visibility. Volunteer services, write articles, or offer to speak at a convention or association gathering. People will notice you.
- Stay on track with a follow-up log. If you promise to call people back, you don’t want to miss those opportunities!
