  1. Know whether you wish to be a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or corporation.
  2. What type of business do you have? This will determine whether you pay income tax, self-employment tax, employment tax, or excise tax.
  3. Every business needs an employer ID number. If you simply work for yourself, however, you can use your social security number.
  4. Choose a reliable record-keeping system and stick with it!
  5. Know if you will file using the calendar year or the fiscal year.
  6. Make sure your accounting method is consistent!
