Financial Wealth Management
Financial Wealth Management Interview – Steinhardt
Here is a short 10 minute interview with Michael Steinhardt from Wisdom Tree Investments. Within this interview he talks about how the stock market from a technical point of view looks poised for a rally yet at the same time shows many signs of a bear market. He believes that financial wealth management professionals face a challenge now within this unique bear market and that a large drop in the price of oil is all that would help now. He also believes that for the next year or two the write offs in the banking sector will continue. He would like to see the fed raise the rates and he believes that this time things are really going to be different this time. If he is right that could mean a prolonged period of low or even negative hedge fund industry returns. I’ll be publishing a hedge fund performance article next week with an update on how different sectors are performing.

Russia ETF
Russia ETF: Market Vectors Russia ETF
Over the last couple of years ETF Funds have become a popular investment. ETF Funds hold a collection of stocks that share certain elements in common. If you as an investor would like to have a stake in the market in Russia it is possible for you to buy an ETF Fund that is based on the country as a whole sector.
You may have already read about the ETF fund that came available on the NYSE in 2007 called Market Vectors Russia ETF. If so, you know that Market Vectors Russia ETF tracks the DAXglobal Russia+ Index. On the NYSE it is listed as RSX.
As you might expect, the fund is heaviest in energy, at 40%. The fund also has exposure to telecom, 17%; iron/steel, 12% and electric, 11%. Like most single-country ETFs, RSX has a larger-cap bias. 92% of the fund is large-cap (6 billion or greater.)
I have not personally invested in an ETF Fund yet but am exploring the idea of investing in Gold or Silver ETF Funds. If any of you have invested in a single-country ETF Fund or sector-focused ETF Funds I would love to hear some feedback as to what you think of the investment and how it has benefited your portfolio. Feel free to leave a comment or email us at christopher.hege@gmail.com if you have any questions about ETF Funds.

Family Owned Businesses
Challenges of Family Owned Businesses
Many wealth individuals or families seek out single and multi-family offices while managing a family business or just after selling one or two family owned businesses. Since this is often the case it might help family office relationship managers to be well experienced or read within the niche of family ran businesses.
I just found a great PowerPoint presentation discussing the challenges of managing a family owned business enterprise and what one group has done to address these challenges. Please click here to read the PowerPoint presentation.

Latin American Funds
Latin American Funds Remain Strong
Here is a guest article by Naveen Kumar on hedge funds in Latin America and Brazil.
The HFN Latin American Average (LatAM) was launched in early 2007 and since then it’s exhibited tremendous growth. The benchmark has increased by almost 30%, blowing away every strategy specific HFN benchmark. Only the HFN benchmarks for Brazil, Middle East, North America, and China have outperformed the LatAM index.
This tremendous growth can be attributed to the large increase of investments in the region’s equity markets. To give you a sense of this, out of the 115 composite funds, 46 focus solely on equities. This is 24 more than in December of 2006. Many of the funds in LatAM focus solely on Brazil, a country whose own benchmark has risen 40%. Luckily funds invested in Brazil have been sheltered from the recent damage as a result of the weakened global prospects suffered by funds invested in India and China.
Total assets for funds invested in Latin America rose quickly in Q1 2008 to a little over $21 billion. This represents a nearly 30% rise in assets in this quarter alone. Rebounding from a slow period between 2004 and 2006, assets between 2007 and 2008 showed an increase of $14.5 billion. Most of this growth was due to new allocations and not simply performance gains.
One point of potential concern is that a rapid influx of capital to a country’s hedge funds is sometimes followed by a drop of in the country’s equity market. This happened in Russia, India, and China and resulted in a fall of assets. In the long term, however, growth prospects look to remain strong.

Planning For Retirement
Planning For Retirement: Video Series Part 1
I found this great video series put on by the National Retirement Planning Coalition that features Ben Stein talking about Planning For Retirement.
Here is an excerpt, and the video.
“There are a lot of things to worry about in this world…Terrorism, the Economy, Disease, but of the things we in middle-age worry about most, high on the list is Retirement. It is frankly scary to think about a time in the future when we’re going to have to live without a regular job or a regular paycheck. How do we prepare, how much do we need, what fraction of what we are living on when we are 50 or 55 do we need to live on when we’re 65 or 75? And how do we get that sum saved?”

Planning For Retirement: Video Series Part 2
I found this great video series put on by the National Retirement Planning Coalition that features Ben Stein talking about Planning For Retirement. This is part 2 of 3 of the video series.
Here is an excerpt from Video 2:
“Generally, with some exceptions, an average couple will need at least 80% of what they have been living on before they retire when they do retire. Afterall, the only large expense they will not have after retirement is saving for retirement. They’ll still need to eat, have a home, dress and travel.”

Chartered Financial Analyst
Chartered Financial Analyst: CFA
The following article I found on wikipedia gives a great overview of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
The CFA designation is a qualification for finance and investment professionals, particularly in the fields of investment management, investment banking and financial analysis of stocks, bonds and their derivative assets. The program focuses on portfolio management and financial analysis, and provides a general knowledge of other areas of finance.
From 1963 (when the CFA designation was first awarded) to 2006, approximately 78,000 people from at least 126 different countries have been awarded the right to use the CFA designation, 68,000 of them in the years since 1990. As of 2006, more than 116,000 more people are currently enrolled to take one of the examinations.
Please see the Official CFA Institute Website for more information on acquiring the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

Multi-Family Offices
Multi-Family Offices
Single and multi-family offices are exclusive wealth management firms that usually only accept clients with at least $10-$25M of investible securities. They typically have less total clients but spend more time with each client often assisting with tax, estate planning, charitable giving, foundation, and even budget issues in addition to traditional wealth management services. The costs are typically a little higher than a traditional wealth management office but you get more personal comprehensive service and usually a more sophisticated view of portfolio construction with access to alternative investments.
We will be blogging much more on family offices and their impact on the financial planning industry this upcoming fall/winter as we start to partner more closely with a large family office association in the industry.

Hedge Fund Investment Adviser
Hedge Funds & Investment Advisers
While hedge funds are showing weak capital raising numbers in 2008 a recent survey came out showing that over 95.7% of investment advisers believe that hedge funds don’t understand their business needs. The same survey showed that over 88.7% of these same advisers thought that sales efforts on behalf of hedge funds are ineffective.
This is great news for those within the hedge fund and third party marketing industries. There is much room for improvement and if you do understand the business needs of financial advisers it would seem that you would have a clear competitive advantage over your competitors.
Here is some more from this article:
_______________________
Nearly 64% of the hedge fund investors described a financial adviser as a “very” or “extremely” important source for making their selection. Other key sources of information investors use in making hedge fund decisions were their own networking or research activities (48.8%); an investment management consultant (21.5%); an accountant (19.4%) and seminars and conferences (17.5%).
“The primary reasons, according to the report, are “inexperienced third-party marketers, sales professionals and wholesalers, one-size-fits-all presentations and aggressive sales tactics and product positioning that leave little room for productive dialogue or interaction.”
Hedge funds need to do their homework and customize their approach to advisers and wealth managers, said Russ Alan Prince, co-author of the report with Hannah Shaw Grove and president of Prince & Associates. Ms. Grove is principal of HSGrove Private Wealth Consultancy in Edison, N.J., and an equity partner of Prince & Associates.
“Hedge funds aren’t making the effort they should,” said Howard Altman, co-managing principal of Roseland, N.J.-based Rothstein Kass, an accounting and consulting firm that specializes in hedge funds and sponsored the report.
But advisers need to do more as well, Mr. Prince said.
“Advisers don’t understand hedge funds, either,” he said. “They have to find a hedge fund with which they can develop a professional rapport and bring to the table for those clients for whom it makes sense.
“Advisers also need to find funds that can offer the right solutions for their clients’ needs,” Mr. Prince said. “Often these are esoteric solutions that advisers are not comfortable with themselves, such as currency or commodity issues, or shorting stocks.”

Single Family Office
Starting a Single of Multi Family Office
I just found this whitepaper on starting a family office. It is a quick read (3-4 pages long) and covers the current state of the family office industry, how much money family offices typically manage and what services that most family office firms currently offer.
Here is the abstract from this family office startup whitepaper: “Many families who have experienced a significant liquidity event will consider setting up a family office. The purpose of this white paper is to discuss the reasons families consider establishing an office, to describe the typical duties of such offices and to suggest a basic framework for designing and setting up a successful family office.”
If you are starting up a multi or single family office let us know if we can help connect you with any resources.

Personal Financial Advising
Personal Financial Advising
Many people are turned off by the ongoing trend of online brokerage and technology-enhanced portfolio optimization and customer service. I have spoken with dozens of well off individuals who would much rather work with someone they trust and know well instead of trusting in a system that is hopefully being kept up to date.
The recent trend in mainstream media on focusing on several of the quantitative-based hedge funds collapsing has also increased the demand for more personal one-on-one based financial planning.

Canadian ETF
Canadian ETF
An exchange-traded fund (or ETF) is an investment vehicle traded on stock exchanges, much like stocks or bonds. An ETF holds assets such as stocks or bonds and trades at approximately the same price as the net asset value of its underlying assets over the course of the trading day. Most ETFs track an index, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the S&P 500. ETFs may be attractive as investments because of their low costs, tax efficiency, and stock-like features. In a survey of investment professionals conducted in March 2008, 67% called ETFs the most innovative investment vehicle of the last two decades and 60% reported that ETFs have fundamentally changed the way they construct investment portfolios.
If you are looking for a Canadian ETF to invest in, here is an extensive Canadian ETF list that I found on wikipedia.org. Hedge Fund Operational Risk
Hedge Funds – Operation Risk Assessments
As the hedge fund industry. matures and manages more assets, investors have developed more thorough due diligence practices. In this white paper cited below investors are warned to scrutinize the operational structure of a fund, as the author believes that some hedge funds are poorly managed with a small staff relative to the massive assets under management.
This white paper recommends a rigorous operational due diligence review that covers the manager’s overall fund structure, back office structure, valuation and independent oversight. The guide looks at several key considerations for hedge fund investors: the experience of the operations personnel, compliance, internal operations, portfolio pricing and the quality of the service providers. There is good news on operational infrastructure, in that middle office functionality has improved with the addition of more major outsourcing providers. Yet a thorough operational due diligence review is still very necessary for hedge fund investors. I thought this resource might be useful to many fund of fund professionals and investors.

Personal Financial Planning
Personal Financial Planning: Why it is important!
Personal Financial Planning is vital to any individual or family that would like to take control of their cash flow, learn how to budget effectively and how to invest for their future. It can also include the knowledge of retirement planning, estate planning, debt elimination, financial forecasting and goal setting.
Those who are intentional about designing their own personal financial plan tend to be more proactive and more successful than those who just fly by the seat of their pants and spend whatever money gets into their hands. They will often succeed in other areas of life as well because they take education and personal growth seriously.
Personal Financial Planning is important because growing wealthy, for 99% of us, does not happen overnight and our money must be carefully managed over time to achieve financial freedom and security.
