I agree with him that if you are not in a job you love or are passionate about you will lag behind everyone else, only put in what is required and never excel or reach your full potential. It also seems to be true that a daily commitment to investing one hour a day to reading, learning and improving yourself pays off within a very short amount of time.

Philanthropic Giving Trend Video

Here is a short video on philanthropic giving. While it strays a bit from the core topic of philanthropy there isn’t much online about ultra-high net worth management or charitable/philanthopic giving by these individuals.

The main point of this video is that the popularity of giving is on the rise and gifts directed through private banking departments and family offices will continue to rise over the next 5-7 years.

Multi-Family Office Services

What Services do Multi-Family Offices Provide?

Multi-Family Offices are exclusive wealth management firms that usually only accept clients with at least $10-$25M of investible securities. They typically have less total clients but spend more time with each client often assisting with tax, estate planning, charitable giving, foundation, and even budget issues in addition to traditional wealth management services. The costs are typically a little higher than a traditional wealth management office but you get more personal comprehensive service and usually a more sophisticated view of portfolio construction with access to alternative investments.

Family office professionals will take the time to ensure your separately managed acocunt investments and Hedge Funds are balanced and in line with your 401k or IRA investments. Their employees are often experienced and sophisticated enough to understand unified managed accounts (umas), and will be able to explain them to clientele so they may be employed where appropriate. While many family offices use hedge fund of funds, family office professionals will often find an individual hedge fund manager that fits you best if they do not already have one that they work with, and ultimately they are known for working harder to make you happy because they only work with a smaller group of core clients. Many high net worth individuals belong to health groups where doctors will take the time to set down with you for a couple hours each quarter or year and talk about your health and habits. This type of highly personal attention is equivalent to what you get in a financial sense at the best family offices.

Financial Wealth Management Interview – Steinhardt

Here is a short 10 minute interview with Michael Steinhardt from Wisdom Tree Investments. Within this interview he talks about how the stock market from a technical point of view looks poised for a rally yet at the same time shows many signs of a bear market. He believes that financial wealth management professionals face a challenge now within this unique bear market and that a large drop in the price of oil is all that would help now. He also believes that for the next year or two the write offs in the banking sector will continue. He would like to see the fed raise the rates and he believes that this time things are really going to be different this time. If he is right that could mean a prolonged period of low or even negative hedge fund industry returns. I’ll be publishing a hedge fund performance article next week with an update on how different sectors are performing.

Accredited Investor

Accredited Investor Definition

I received an email last Thursday from someone within the Hedge Fund Group (HFG) asking if I had an accredited investor definition post on my blog which lists the items which allow someone to be considered an accredited investor. When I told them that I had not yet, they sent me over what their firm is using so I could share it here. This is not a legal resource to be used to run a hedge fund business but it is a list of ways someone can be considered an “accredited investor.” Please let me know if I missed anything here – Richard@HedgeFundGoup.org.

An accredited Investor is someone who fits within any of the following categories, or who the issuer reasonably believes comes within any of the following categories, at the time of the sale of the Interests to that person:

1. Any bank as defined in Section 3(a)(2) of the Securities Act or any savings and loan association or other institution as defined in Section 3(a)(5)(A) of the Securities Act whether acting in its individual or fiduciary capacity; any broker or dealer registered pursuant to Section 15 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934; any insurance company as defined in Section 2(13) of the Securities Act; any investment company registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 or a business development company as defined in Section 2(a)(48) of the Investment Company Act of 1940; any Small Business Investment Company licensed by the U.S. Small Business Administration under Section 301(c) or (d) of the Small Business Investment Act of 1958;
2. Any private business development company as defined in Section 202(a)(22) of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940;
3. Any organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended (the “Code”), corporation, Massachusetts or similar business trust, or partnership, not formed for the specific purpose of acquiring the securities offered, with total assets in excess of $5,000,000;
4. Any director, executive officer, or general partner of the issuer of the securities being offered or sold, or any director, executive officer, or general partner of a general partner of that issuer;
5. Any natural person whose individual net worth, or joint net worth with that person’s spouse, at the time of his purchase exceeds $1,000,000;
6. Any natural person who had an individual income in excess of $200,000 in each of the two most recent years or joint income with that person’s spouse in excess of $300,000 in each of those years and has a reasonable expectation of reaching the same income level in the current year;
7. Any trust with total assets in excess of $5,000,000, not formed for the specific purpose of acquiring the securities offered, whose purchase is directed by a sophisticated person as described in Rule 506(b)(2)(ii) of the Securities Act; and
8. Any entity in which all of the equity owners are Accredited Investors.

In order to be considered an Accredited Investor, an employee benefit plan will be required to meet one of the following conditions: (a) the investment decision for the employee benefit plan is made by a plan fiduciary which is either a bank, savings and loan association, insurance company or registered investment advisor; (b) the employee benefit plan has total assets in excess of $5,000,000; (c) in the case of self-directed employee benefit plans, investment decisions are made solely by persons that are Accredited Investors; or (d) the plan is established and maintained by a state, its political subdivisions, or any agency or instrumentality of a state or its political subdivisions, for the benefit of its employees, if such plan has total assets in excess of $5,000,000.

Richard, I understand that you are not offering legal advice, but your response seems to me to be overly US centric. I cover investors in Japan and Korea where this term has a specific meaning, each unique and different from the US version. Every jurisdiction tries to establish its own safeguards in order to protect public investors in its country from exposure to solicitation of unregistered securities – such as hedge funds – by unregulated sales people. Most definitions seek to establish a threshold, usually according to wealth or sophistication, where such safeguards will not be necessary.

In May, HFN Hedge Fund Average Aggregate was +2.02%, and the S&P Total Returns Index was +1.30%. The energy sector continued to rise this year with the HFN Energy Sector Average at +4.38% last month. The equity markets’ success seems to have led to the HFN Long/Short Equity Average outperforming the S&P Total Return Index, yielding +2.76.

In regional benchmarks, while hedge funds investing in China and India performed dismally, funds investing in Russia and Brazil boosted the Emerging Markets Average to +2.55%. Hedge funds using the long only strategy have performed poorly this year but improved thanks to the global equity markets, the Long Only Average was %3.41 in May. Investors have shown dissatisfaction with the technology sector through redemptions and liquidations. Total assets in tech sector funds fell 10.89% in Q1 of 2008, yet the Technology Sector Average was one of the best performers in May at 3.46%.

A new survey shows that more than one-third of hedge fund and CTA managers are dissatisfied with their prime brokers. The most notable dissatisfaction is with the prime brokers’ personal service. In 2007 80% of funds rated the personal service of their prime brokers as either “good” or “excellent”, this year only 63% gave their prime brokers high marks. This may be a result of the liquidity crisis, which 16% of the managers said negatively effected the relationship with their prime broker.

The survey also shows that many funds are happy with the cost of their prime brokers, with only 7% responding “poor”. However, a considerable 38% of managers rating their prime brokers as “poor” performers of capital introduction. Funds who consider themselves technologically advanced are the most satisfied with their prime brokers.

Private Banking Trends

Private banking is a term for banking, investment and other financial services provided by banks to private individuals disposing of sizable assets. The term “private” refers to the customer service being rendered on a more personal basis than in mass-market retail banking, usually via dedicated bank advisers. It should not be confused with a private bank which is simply a non-incorporated banking institution.

Traditionally, the Private Banking world has consisted of individuals with liquid assets of $2,000,000 or more. More recently, Private Banking options have become available to individuals with as low as $250,000 in liquid assets.

Long Stock Position

Long Stock Position Definition

(1) An option position in which a person has executed one or more options trades with the net result being that the number of contracts bought exceeds the number of contracts sold. In such a case, the person is an “owner” or holder of options.

(2) A position in which an individual owns securities. An owner of 1,000 shares of stock is said to be “long the stock.

Stock Exchanges in US| A List

In the US stock exchanges are formal organizations that are approved and regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), that are made up of members that use the facilities to exchange certain common stocks. The two major national stock exchanges are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the American Stock Exchange (ASE or AMEX), in addition to the National Association of Securities Dealers Automatic Quotation System (NASDAQ). Five regional stock exchanges include the Midwest, Pacific, Philadelphia, Boston, and Cincinnati. The Arizona stock exchange is an after hours electronic marketplace in which anonymous participants trade stocks via personal computers.
