The music business is a tough one, but very enjoyable for those who manage to find their niche there. If you love the night life, discovering new bands, listening to music, and recognizing new trends in music, then this industry may be a great one for you. But getting into this type of work is not as easy as all that.
This industry is one where who you know is extremely important. Top positions are often filled by word-of-mouth and go completely unadvertised. As a result, the best way to break in is to do an internship. This low-pay (or no pay) position will help you solidify your connections within the business, and help others to see that you are a prime candidate for an entry-level job.
To make your internship work for you, though, you need to remember some interning basics that will demonstrate what a knowledgeable and hard worker you are:
- Always be early
- Be eager to learn
- Introduce yourself to everyone
- Look for ways to make yourself indispensable
- Offer to take on some of the work of your coworkers.
- Be willing to do menial tasks
- Always offer to tear-down or set-up for musicians
- When meeting famous people, act normal. Don’t ask for autographs!
