Middle East Hedge Fund Event

Hedge Funds Review – Middle East Summit

Middle East Event, Event in the Middle East, Middle East Summit, Middle East Events, Hedge Funds in the Middle East, Hedge Fund Manager Middle EastThe editorial and conference teams at Hedge Funds Review are proud to announce that our 4th Annual Middle East Summit will once again be held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Spa, Bahrain on November 11-12th 2008.

Last year’s event was hugely successful, bringing together over 250 key players in the alternative investment landscape. More than 70% of delegates were end investors.

Highlights included official endorsement from the Governor of the Central Bank of Bahrain and guest speeches from some of the most successful hedge fund managers from across the globe.

This year the keynote address will be given by HE Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa, Minister of Finance for Bahrain and chairman of the Mumtalakat Holding Company. We will also be hearing an update on regulations from the Central Bank of Bahrain, particularly on how the recent collective investment undertaking (CIU) rules have affected hedge fund investment in the region, as well as a chance to hear about the recently launched Al Safi Shariah compliant investment platform.

Throughout the two-day programme we will have expert managers discussing individual investment strategies. These include commodities, managed futures, emerging markets and many others. We also have leading academics sharing their views on the global credit crisis and the affect this will have on the Gulf region.

Full information on the programme and our outstanding speaker line-up can be found here – www.hedgefundsreview.com/middleeast

4 Hedge Fund Investment Mistakes

Hedge Fund Investment Mistakes

Top 4 Hedge Fund Investment Mistakes

4 Hedge Fund Investment Mistakes, Hedge Funds Investment, Hedge Fund Investment Management, Hedge Fund Alternative InvestmentsThere are many good and bad reasons to invest in hedge funds. Below are 4 of the most common hedge fund investment mistakes that I see or hear talked about by hedge fund managers, family offices and financial advisors. Each of these points are cautions on not any form of financial advice or recommendation recommendations on investing with any particular hedge fund strategy.

  1. Investing based on emotions, market heights and excitement. Investing based on a hunch or short term trend can help find new ideas or hedge fund managers with unique perspectives but without thorough due diligence can lead to working with sub-par managers.
  2. Chasing high returns. Many un-experienced Investors don’t ask themselves often enough – at what risk were those returns gained? What risks am I comfortable in taking on? Etc. This is why a wealth management firm or family office or consultant can be critical to making sure you are making wise investment choices for your unique situation, goals and needs.
  3. Investing with friends – Many times you may not see the forest while being asked for money from a friend. The truth is that many hedge funds do not survive in the long-term. They are not asking to borrow a book, this is your hard earned money. If you can’t afford to lose the money you might not want to invest it in a hedge fund or at least a friend’s hedge fund at all.
  4. “Hedge Fund Rich” – Thinking that a single – all eggs in one basket bet is going to make you rich. This rarely happens, the average hedge fund does beat the S&P but is far from returning the types of returns you sometimes read about in the papers. The most popular mainstream media outlets like to focus on the extreme because it sells newspapers, it draws eye balls. Most hedge fund managers are not frauds and most do not return 56% returns for their investors. Make sure and conduct industry-wide research from Databases and not just WSJ articles and coffee table talk with friends. Thorough due diligence and hard numbers trump all opinions.

Prime Brokerage Research

Changes to the Prime Brokerage Industry

Prime Brokerage Research, equity prime brokerage, global prime brokerageQuick Link: List of Hedge Fund Prime Brokers

FinAlternatives recently completed a great prime brokerage survey/report where they discussed how the highly-publicized hedge fund blowups, the Bear Stearnes collapse and the mortgage crisis have forced the prime brokerage industry to adapt more diligence in hedge funds’ risk exposure and leverage. Institutional investors are increasingly demanding hedge funds to have greater transparency, and hedge funds have passed much of this responsibility to prime brokers. Hedge funds are now employing multiple prime brokers and are more demanding of the services the brokers offer.

Many of the larger hedge funds hoping to minimize exposure are moving fully-paid assets from prime brokers to banks. The larger hedge funds cut third-party risk by financing long positions exclusively through a bank. On the other hand, smaller and mid-size hedge funds are struggling to secure lending and prime brokers. It is especially difficult for small single-strategy hedge funds to find a prime broker, as prime brokers favor the diversified multi-strategy funds.

Recent turbulence in the hedge fund industry has led investors to demand greater transparency of managers. Managers have relayed this responsibility to prime brokers, who have evolved to provide improved risk analytics and add more services to their clients.

Renaissance Technologies

Renaissance Technologies – Hedge Fund Profile

Renaissance Technologies, Jim Simmons, Renaissance Technologies Hedge Fund, Renaissance Technologies Hedge Fund ManagerHere is a collection of links to resources and articles on the hedge fund – Renaissance Technologies. All of these sources below are publicly available and can be easily found by anyone via Google searches. They are listed here for those who would like to skip the junk and learn more about Renaissance Technologies more efficiently than they might through Google alone.
___________________________

Resource #1: 5.18.09) Most hedge funds flourished in April. Renaissance Technologies took a bath.

The Long Island firm’s Renaissance Institutional Equities Fund lost between 8.33% and 9.47% last month, depending on the share class. The fund, RenTech’s largest, is now down between 16.86% and 17.61%, according to a letter to investors obtained by Dealbreaker. source

Resource #1: (4.3.09) James Simons, the founder of New York-based Renaissance Technologies, was the top earning hedge fund manager last year, earning $2.5bn in spite of the extreme market volatility, as his 20-year-old flagship fund generated a net return of 80 per cent.

A survey by Alpha Magazine, published on Wednesday, describes the returns generated by the Medallion Fund as “hard to fathom”, adding that Mr Simons’ fees are among the highest in the world – a 5 per cent management fee and a 44 per cent performance fee. source

Resource #2: (2.4.09) Renaissance Technologies LLC, the multibillion dollar hedge fund known for delivering top returns by relying on complicated computer models, hired a new president and chief executive officer for its institutional business.

The fund firm, which manages roughly $20 billion, said on Tuesday that it has hired Matthew Scanlan to replace Stephen Robert, who retired from the firm. source

Resource #3 (1.5.09) Over the past few weeks you probably saw signs in retail stores touting “big sales” with discounts of 50% to 70& off. It seems that Wall Street has caught on to main street’s way of doing business – discounts, discounts, discounts!

The Renaissance Technologies LLC, a large hedge fund, has waived all of its management fees for 2009. Originally it charged a 1% fixed management fee, but with the new policy it will take a $30 million dollar haircut. However, the other larger Simon’s Renaissance Institutional Equities Fund will not cut its management fee in 2009. Other funds are using similar practices. The Citadel Investment Group LLC gave back about $300 million dollars in fees it collected in 2008.

Renaissance, like many other hedge funds, suffered losses in 2008 ranging from 12% to 16% but managed to beat the S & P losses by 4-6%. source

Financial Certification

Financial Certification in Hedge Funds

Here is the result of a recent interview I completed with the Financial Times regarding the Hedge Fund Group (HFG) and Certified Hedge Fund Professional (CHP) Designation, a new financial certification. Thanks to Fintag for the friendly (overly friendly) plug over on his blog here.

Here is a short excerpt from the Financial Times article:

Financial Certification Financial Certification“Students can receive qualifications for almost anything, be it a “maple syrup” course at New York’s Alfred University or “cyberfeminism” at Cornell. Basic economics teaches that so long as there is demand and resources, supply will shortly follow.

Richard Wilson, founder of the Hedge Fund Group (HFG), a professional networking organisation, witnessed a demand for a programme dedicated to the study of hedge funds. This discovery led to the Certified Hedge Fund Professional (CHP) Designate initiative. Mr Wilson previously worked for a currency and commodity hedge fund and a fund of funds in South Africa before joining a hedge fund marketing firm.

The charter he has helped create is a programme designed to prepare students for life in a hedge fund. “It will also save two-thirds of training on the job and enable them to walk right in and know what is going on,” says Mr Wilson.

CHP Logo Small Financial CertificationThe Chartered Financial Analyst and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst are well established rival programmes. The CHFA project, launched in mid-July, is designed to be similar, but not a copy of others…. An online training forum provides career advice, CV checks, and access to a directory of managing directors and recruiters for students. Students gain admission to the Hedge Fund Group (HFG) and its 9,000 members.

The charter received roughly 900 applications for the first year, but intake was limited to 100…. “The Hedge Fund Group (HFG) team has been fabulous. They answer every question quickly, accurately and professionally. It’s this stuff that, quite simply, builds credibility,” says, Sameer Vishwanathan, a new student of the CHP Designation Program.”

Email Newsletter Tool

Start A Hedge Fund Related Newsletter

Email Newsletter Tool Email Newsletter ToolEven though almost everyone uses email now not many firms in the hedge fund industry provide a consistent weekly, monthly or even quarterly email newsletter. Why? Because it takes a little bit of trial and error and some consistent work to produce the fresh content for each new issue.

Providing an email newsletter can provide a competitive advantage for your firm as you are able to keep on top of minds of prospects, be seen as a thought leader in your space, have your newsletter forwarded on to other prospects and show your level of niche expertise. I have found email newsletter by the best way to keep in touch with everyone that I have met through this hedge fund blog, my Hedge Fund Blog Book downloads and Hedge Fund Group (HFG).

One of the leading email newsletter management firms is Aweber. Aweber is used by over 1,000 firms worldwide and I have been satisfied with their easy-to-use service and quick online customer service. It is relatively easy to get started. After playing around with settings for 20-30 minutes most people would be ready to test sending out their own email newsletter using one of their graphical templates or just using traditional plain text formatting:

Click here now to see what they offer: Aweber Email Newsletter Services

Note: Certain restrictions apply to email advertisements or newsletters if you are a hedge fund manager or offer certain types of investment advice, recommendations, etc. Please consult a legal expert or in-house compliance counsel for advice before starting your email campaign.

Small Hedge Funds

Interview on Small Hedge Funds

Small Hedge Funds, New Hedge FundsI recently completed two interviews. One with the Financial Times and another short interview for an article being written on small hedge funds with less than $100M in assets under management.

Here is a short excerpt of this second article and link to the full article:

The storm over Wall Street has abated somewhat, but the tide of bad news is receding slowly, complicating life for hedge fund managers and the rest of the financial industry. “The credit crunch continues,” said Ed Grebeck, CEO of Tempus Advisors in Stamford, Conn.

While large institutions have endured round after round of pain, scores of small, relatively unknown hedge funds, or largely unregulated pools of investments, have quietly worked through the turmoil. These smaller funds continue to score better returns than their bigger, more-seasoned peers, which control the majority of hedge fund assets.

The average return of small funds was 11.74 percent through last December, according to a hedge fund index compiled by New York-based PerTrac Financial Solutions. Medium- and large-sized funds returned 10.27 percent and 10.22 percent respectively.

“Smaller funds have historically been more profitable than big hedge funds,” said PerTrac Managing Director Meredith Jones from Nashville. The study defined small funds as those with less than $100 million in managed assets. Medium-sized funds were defined as those with $100 million to $500 million in managed assets, with anything over the $500 million mark considered large.

“There are thousands of hedge fund managers out there managing between $10 million and $100 million,” said hedge fund consultant Richard Wilson in an email. “Lots of hard work entrepreneurs who are rarely mentioned.

Philanthropic Giving

Philanthropic Giving Trend Video

Philanthropic GivingHere is a short video on philanthropic giving. While it strays a bit from the core topic of philanthropy there isn’t much online about ultra-high net worth management or charitable/philanthopic giving by these individuals.

The main point of this video is that the popularity of giving is on the rise and gifts directed through private banking departments and family offices will continue to rise over the next 5-7 years.

They typically have less total clients but spend more time with each client often assisting with tax, estate planning, charitable giving, foundation, and even budget issues in addition to traditional wealth management services. The costs are typically a little higher than a traditional wealth management office but you get more personal comprehensive service and usually a more sophisticated view of portfolio construction with access to alternative investments.

Family office professionals will take the time to ensure your separately managed acocunt investments and Hedge Funds are balanced and in line with your 401k or IRA investments. Their employees are often experienced and sophisticated enough to understand unified managed accounts (umas), and will be able to explain them to clientele so they may be employed where appropriate. While many family offices use hedge fund of funds, family office professionals will often find an individual hedge fund manager that fits you best if they do not already have one that they work with, and ultimately they are known for working harder to make you happy because they only work with a smaller group of core clients. Many high net worth individuals belong to health groups where doctors will take the time to set down with you for a couple hours each quarter or year and talk about your health and habits. This type of highly personal attention is equivalent to what you get in a financial sense at the best family offices.

Pain Free Selling

Pain Free Hedge Fund Marketing

Here is a short video on pain free selling. If you have read a lot of marketing and sales books many will recommend that you find your customer’s pain. I agree with Jeffrey Gitomer though that in the hedge fund world you should build marketing efforts based on relationships, positive solutions and goals. Here’s a clip on this idea:

Stock Market Timing

Stock Market Timing Interview – Steinhardt

Stock Market Timing, Timing the stock market, stock market timing system, timing of the stock marketHere is a short 10 minute interview with Michael Steinhardt from Wisdom Tree Investments. Within this interview he talks about how the stock market from a technical point of view looks poised for a rally yet at the same time shows many signs of a bear market. He believes that stock market timing or predicting commodities prices is always next to impossible and that for the next year or two the write offs in the banking sector will continue. He would like to see the fed raise the rates and he believes that this time things are really going to be different this time. If he is right that could mean a prolonged period of low or even negative hedge fund industry returns. I’ll be publishing a hedge fund performance article next week with an update on how different sectors are performing.

Prime Brokerage Asia

Prime Brokerage Asia

Prime Brokers in Asia / Japan / China

Prime Brokerage Asia, Asian Prime Brokerage Quick Link: List of Hedge Fund Prime Brokers

I recently read a short article about the prime brokerage business in Asia through FinAlternative’s prime brokerage survey. While many local markets have been recently hurt performance-wise Asia has a vastly expanding hedge fund industry, and prime brokerages are bolstering their capacity in Asia by buying up talented executives from the top firms.

Major firms like Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley have struggled to retain their top executives in Asia from rival prime brokerages. Goldman Sachs now claims five managing directors of its Asian prime brokerage division, and has plans to have another series of major hiring. Asia, being the fastest growing hedge funds market, has become more and more important for successful prime brokerages.

A growing number of Hedge Fund Group (HFG) members have been expressing an interest in learning more about hedge funds in Asia, hedge fund jobs in Asia and ways to seek exposure to new investor markets within that region of the world. If you have any white papers or PowerPoints on this topic and don’t mind sharing them please send them over. Thanks in advance.
