Hedge Funds Gain

Hedge Funds Gain

Hedge Funds Gain 2.42% in July 2009

86gain Hedge Funds GainHedge funds have continued this years impressive rally with more gains in July. According to data, the average hedge fund gained 2.42% last month, a much higher gain that the 0.13% increase in June. This signals a broader recovery of the hedge fund industry which struggled with redemptions and poor performance last year. On average hedge funds are up by 12.17% for this year through July 31.

“Overall, the hedge fund industry is continuing to build itself back up from the low points,” said Scott Esser, chief operations officer for the Hedge Fund Research in Chicago. Strong “equity market returns had a lot to do with it and the return of credit and decrease of volatility has helped,” he added.

The returns still fell short of the Standard & Poor’s 7.4 percent rise in July. Last month, the Dow industrials had their best July since 1989 and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq recorded their best gains for July since 1997.

Still, the figures marked the fifth consecutive month of gains for the hedge fund industry, which posted a record 19 percent loss in 2008. The industry saw investors pull out a record $152 billion in the last three months of 2008.

This year, July returns were driven by strong performances at fixed-income funds that specialize in “convertible arbitrage” strategies that match the purchase of convertible bonds with short positions. The these funds were up 7.27 percent in July on average and up 38.63 for the year. Read more..

Christmas Eve Hedge Fund Linkfest

Hedge Fund News Christmas Eve Link Fest on Hedge FundsFor those of you like me who always want to stay on the ball but can’t work 10 hours/day over the holidays, here is a concise run down on recent hedge fund events and stories in the industry:

  1. A former stockbroker who was fined $350,000 in 2006 for his role in a Ponzi scheme allegedly conspired with New York lawyer Marc Dreier to defraud hedge funds out of more than $100 million, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Tuesday. source
  2. Rene-Thierry Magon de la Villehuchet, a founder of the hedge fund Access International Advisors, was found dead Tuesday in his office in Manhattan. His fund reportedly lost as much as $1.4 billion that had been invested with Bernard L. Madoff, the money manager accused of running a $50 billion Ponzi scheme. source
  3. The property market collapse still has two years to run and will not bottom out until prices are 35% below their peak, a leading City forecaster warned today. source
  4. Blackstone Group LP (BX.N) said on Tuesday it plans to liquidate two hedge funds as a lack of outside investing amid tight credit markets will prevent them from getting big enough to be meaningful to the company.

The private equity firm plans to consolidate its distressed securities fund with GSO Capital Partners, a hedge fund manager it acquired in March for $10 billion. source

Hedge Fund Discussion

Hedge Fund Discussion Piece

23 Wall Street New York Hedge Fund Discussion | A Commentary PieceI can’t tell if Mr. Berko is for or against hedge funds, I will leave it up to you to decide….

Dear Mr. Berko: There’s big trouble in the $3 trillion hedge fund industry. Many have lost massive amounts of money because the market has gone against them and thousands of hedge fund employees are losing their jobs. The Hedge Fund Sector is a very vital sector of our economy and I’ve not heard a word from the Department of Treasury or the Federal Reserve about helping the hedge fund industry in this economic crisis. In 2000, then Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan rescued Long Term Capital Management and saved it from complete collapse. Many hedge-fund investors can’t get their investments back because the hedge funds can’t get the credit they need to finance their portfolio positions or investor withdrawals. Do you believe the government should assist these people who invested their money in good faith? — H.W., Boston.

Dear H.W.: Hedge funds are being rocked, socked, knocked, clocked and docked by the market. Most deserve every blow they get and then some. These financial leeches provide zero-sum benefit to our economy. Many of these funds contributed to the mortgage crisis, the credit crisis, the oil crisis, the bank crisis and the soon-to-occur credit card crisis as well as the soon to-occur-crisis with the Big Three auto companies. These funds, along with Goldman Sachs, Lehman Bros., Bear Stearns, etc., helped push the price of oil past the $145 level by trading contracts between themselves at predetermined prices. They are one of the reasons many Americans had to pay $4.25 a gallon and more at the pump. These funds traded and shorted billions of dollars of subprime mortgage securities between themselves, creating unprecedented volatility and cascading losses. And these hedge funds shorted hundreds of millions of shares of bank stocks, collapsing their market values, pushing Countrywide, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Washington Mutual into bankruptcy.

Marrow suckers These hedge funds gleefully sucked the marrow from the backbone of our financial system. They had this power because they are unregulated (they had strong lobbyists in Congress) and are not required to abide by the same rules that control the trading activities of Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, Vanguard and other funds owned by most of the less-affluent public. Many of the 10,107 hedge funds are hurting badly, very badly, as they got caught on the wrong side of the oil market, the wrong side of the commodity market, the wrong side of the dollar, the Yen and the Euro. They got sliced and diced in the derivative market, were boxed by the credit market and bet the wrong horses in the mortgage-backed securities markets. Things got so bad that investors began a stampede to safety and these funds, which were highly leveraged, didn’t have the capital to return principal to their hugely wealthy investors. Read more…

Gottex Hedge Fund

Gottex Fund Management – William Landes

Gottex FundProducts as the one below are interesting to watch grow, or not as they try to sometimes sell products to groups which traditionally have build their own portfolio’s in-house with the aide of consultants.

The following piece on Gottex Fund is being published as part of our daily effort to track hedge fund events in the industry. To review other hedge fund related announcements please see our Hedge Fund Tracker Tool.

Resource #1: (5.10.09) Swiss fund of hedge funds shop Gottex Fund Management has taken a controlling stake in U.S-based firm SJC Capital Partners.

The U.S. asset management firm, which was founded last year by Stephen Czech, specializes in provided secured loans to middle market companies that are unable to obtain loans from traditional sources due to the credit crisis.

Gottex is banking on the direct lending market, which its expects to continue to be “a very attractive investment space in the years to come as traditional financing sources for the middle market continue to contract or exit this market segment.” source

Resource #2: Swiss funds-of-funds firm Gottex Fund Management is launching a fund that will emulate the investment principles of U.S. “super endowments.” The new fund will emulate the investment principles of successful U.S. university endowment funds, such as Harvard and Princeton. It will allocate about 65% to alternative investments.

The alternative part of the portfolio will cut across all asset classes: hedge funds, private equity, commodities, long-only equity, fixed income, real estate and other real assets. Harvard Management, long the model for university endowment funds currently with about $35 billion in assets, increased more than 20% year over year in 2007.

William Landes is helming the new fund. Landes joined Gottex from Boston-based 2100 Capital, his hedge fund specialty firm that Old Mutual Asset Management bought in 2005. Before that Landes was a money manager at Putnam Investments, which helped incubate 2100 Capital. Landes’ experience with broad-based funds was part of what led him to Gottex, he told HedgeFund.net.

“This is something I’ve been doing for over 15 years,” Landes said. “So when Joe Gottschalk [CEO of Gottex] and I began talking about the possibility of me coming over, we started talking about ways to provide sophisticated investment for high net worth investors.” In preparation for the new fund launch, Landes said his team determined that a 65% exposure to alternative investments combined with traditional investments did the best in the long term. Hedge Fund News

Hedge Fund News Sources

hedge fund news, hedge funds news I decided early on that instead of competing with the 82 other hedge fund websites pumping out news by the hour I would leave that up to the professionals that have been doing a great job at this over the past several years.

I try to focus 80-90% of my articles on educational articles, trend analysis, book reviews, interviews and strategy explanations. For those of you who are looking for the best sources on hedge fund news here are my top 7 recommendations:

  1. Google News
  2. Albourne Village
  3. FINAlternatives
  4. HedgeCo
  5. Hedge Fund News Weblog
  6. Fintag
  7. Energy View points

I would avoid HedgeWorld and other smaller hedge fund news sites because they a simply re often a re-production of what you can find within the above list. If anyone has a niche hedge fund news website they would like added here or considered for my list of the Top 50 Hedge Fund Websites, let me know. My email address is Richard@RichardCWilson.com.

Hedge Fund Decline

Hedge Fund Industry Decline?

Hedge Fund Decline, Hedge Fund Risk, Hedge Fund industry Decline, Hedge Fund Assets Decline, Hedge Fund NewsI am shocked at the number of news reporters who are predicting the doomsday of hedge funds. I have read at least a dozen articles by journalists recently become asset management experts make claims that most hedge funds will soon fade away into the sunset. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Hedge fund strategies are growing, not shrinking and their returns are continually diverging away from common return patterns found in the public equity markets.

To their credit I have noticed that Fierce Finance’s daily newsletter on happenings in the industry has been on target and reasonable in all of their summary reports. It’s a pretty good all in one financial news report if anyone else is looking for one.
