Do you enjoy debt collection? Chances are you don’t. Few people do. Yet, in order to keep your business afloat, it simply must be done. There are techniques, however, to making the process as efficient and painless as possible.
- First of all, you must give people the benefit of the doubt. Assume they are honest and want to do the right thing. This shows respect and high expectations, and people respond well to that.
- Find out the cause of delinquency. Why is the customer unable to pay? If it is a sudden problem after many years of timely payment, it will be worth it to work out a payment schedule and keep that customer in the long run.
- Try to find win-win solutions. Listen to the client’s problem and genuinely try to come up with a good answer that will benefit you both without straining your relations.
Debt collection is unpleasant and difficult. Nobody wants to hassle with delinquent customers who could turn out to be evasive and unpleasant, but always remember that if you treat customers right and offer them payment plans, you can help someone out of a jam while also keeping customers and establishing long-term loyalty.
