Renaissance Technologies

Renaissance Technologies – Hedge Fund Profile

Renaissance Technologies, Jim Simmons, Renaissance Technologies Hedge Fund, Renaissance Technologies Hedge Fund ManagerHere is a collection of links to resources and articles on the hedge fund – Renaissance Technologies. All of these sources below are publicly available and can be easily found by anyone via Google searches. They are listed here for those who would like to skip the junk and learn more about Renaissance Technologies more efficiently than they might through Google alone.
___________________________

Resource #1: 5.18.09) Most hedge funds flourished in April. Renaissance Technologies took a bath.

The Long Island firm’s Renaissance Institutional Equities Fund lost between 8.33% and 9.47% last month, depending on the share class. The fund, RenTech’s largest, is now down between 16.86% and 17.61%, according to a letter to investors obtained by Dealbreaker. source

Resource #1: (4.3.09) James Simons, the founder of New York-based Renaissance Technologies, was the top earning hedge fund manager last year, earning $2.5bn in spite of the extreme market volatility, as his 20-year-old flagship fund generated a net return of 80 per cent.

A survey by Alpha Magazine, published on Wednesday, describes the returns generated by the Medallion Fund as “hard to fathom”, adding that Mr Simons’ fees are among the highest in the world – a 5 per cent management fee and a 44 per cent performance fee. source

Resource #2: (2.4.09) Renaissance Technologies LLC, the multibillion dollar hedge fund known for delivering top returns by relying on complicated computer models, hired a new president and chief executive officer for its institutional business.

The fund firm, which manages roughly $20 billion, said on Tuesday that it has hired Matthew Scanlan to replace Stephen Robert, who retired from the firm. source

Resource #3 (1.5.09) Over the past few weeks you probably saw signs in retail stores touting “big sales” with discounts of 50% to 70& off. It seems that Wall Street has caught on to main street’s way of doing business – discounts, discounts, discounts!

The Renaissance Technologies LLC, a large hedge fund, has waived all of its management fees for 2009. Originally it charged a 1% fixed management fee, but with the new policy it will take a $30 million dollar haircut. However, the other larger Simon’s Renaissance Institutional Equities Fund will not cut its management fee in 2009. Other funds are using similar practices. The Citadel Investment Group LLC gave back about $300 million dollars in fees it collected in 2008.

Renaissance, like many other hedge funds, suffered losses in 2008 ranging from 12% to 16% but managed to beat the S & P losses by 4-6%. source

Email Newsletter Tool

Start A Hedge Fund Related Newsletter

Email Newsletter Tool Email Newsletter ToolEven though almost everyone uses email now not many firms in the hedge fund industry provide a consistent weekly, monthly or even quarterly email newsletter. Why? Because it takes a little bit of trial and error and some consistent work to produce the fresh content for each new issue.

Providing an email newsletter can provide a competitive advantage for your firm as you are able to keep on top of minds of prospects, be seen as a thought leader in your space, have your newsletter forwarded on to other prospects and show your level of niche expertise. I have found email newsletter by the best way to keep in touch with everyone that I have met through this hedge fund blog, my Hedge Fund Blog Book downloads and Hedge Fund Group (HFG).

One of the leading email newsletter management firms is Aweber. Aweber is used by over 1,000 firms worldwide and I have been satisfied with their easy-to-use service and quick online customer service. It is relatively easy to get started. After playing around with settings for 20-30 minutes most people would be ready to test sending out their own email newsletter using one of their graphical templates or just using traditional plain text formatting:

Click here now to see what they offer: Aweber Email Newsletter Services

Note: Certain restrictions apply to email advertisements or newsletters if you are a hedge fund manager or offer certain types of investment advice, recommendations, etc. Please consult a legal expert or in-house compliance counsel for advice before starting your email campaign.

    Small Hedge Funds

    Interview on Small Hedge Funds

Small Hedge Funds, New Hedge FundsI recently completed two interviews. One with the Financial Times and another short interview for an article being written on small hedge funds with less than $100M in assets under management.

Here is a short excerpt of this second article and link to the full article:

The storm over Wall Street has abated somewhat, but the tide of bad news is receding slowly, complicating life for hedge fund managers and the rest of the financial industry. “The credit crunch continues,” said Ed Grebeck, CEO of Tempus Advisors in Stamford, Conn.

While large institutions have endured round after round of pain, scores of small, relatively unknown hedge funds, or largely unregulated pools of investments, have quietly worked through the turmoil. These smaller funds continue to score better returns than their bigger, more-seasoned peers, which control the majority of hedge fund assets.

The average return of small funds was 11.74 percent through last December, according to a hedge fund index compiled by New York-based PerTrac Financial Solutions. Medium- and large-sized funds returned 10.27 percent and 10.22 percent respectively.

“Smaller funds have historically been more profitable than big hedge funds,” said PerTrac Managing Director Meredith Jones from Nashville. The study defined small funds as those with less than $100 million in managed assets. Medium-sized funds were defined as those with $100 million to $500 million in managed assets, with anything over the $500 million mark considered large.

“There are thousands of hedge fund managers out there managing between $10 million and $100 million,” said hedge fund consultant Richard Wilson in an email. “Lots of hard work entrepreneurs who are rarely mentioned.

    Hedge Funds in India

    Hedge Funds Based in India

India Hedge Funds, India Hedge Fund, Hedge Funds in IndiaMore hedge funds which seem to mostly manage over $300M each are establishing a presence in India. Here is an excerpt from a recent article from VC Circle:

A bear market rally on the Indian bourses is attracting a renewed interest from the hedge fund managers. It is now, Stephen Mandel, one of the highest paid hedge fund managers in the world, eyeing the Indian stock markets. Lone Pine Capital LLC, run by Stephen Mandel, and Traxis Partners LLC, are among 56 overseas funds who have registered with market regulator SEBI in July alone to invest in Indian markets, reports Bloomberg.

Interestiongly, this period saw the maximum number of hedge funds registering in India. Samir Arora’s Helios Capital Management Pte is another leading hedge fund that have registered with SEBI. Stonewater Capital LLC was another one. Caxton Associates LLC, an $11 billion fund started by Bruce Kovner, and Daniel Loeb’s Third Point LLC are also among 293 funds approved in India this year. Dubai-based Baer Capital Partners had recently launched Beacon India Alpha Equity Fund, a long/short equity fund.

Why sudden surge of interest? The funds were asked to register in India to invest in indian shares, or given 18 months to sell their holdings. SEBI board will meet today to evaluate the impact of those rules, Bloomberg reported quoting the finance ministry.”

    Thailand ETF

iShares MSCI Thailand Investable Market Index Fund (THD) and other Thailand Investment Options

Thailand ETFIn 2002 I visited Thailand for about 5 weeks. Most of the time that I spent in the country was in Bangkok, a city that is estimated to have about 15 Million people. It was quite an amazing city to visit. The people that I met in Thailand were so friendly and hospitable! It was an honor to be able to spend some time there amongst such great people.

In the last couple of months I have started to do a lot of research on Exchange Traded Funds and learned that there is a Thailand ETF that recently became available to investors (inception date of 03/26/2008.) Thailand doesn’t have endless trading vehicles for US investors to use for investing in Thailand, but there are some trading instruments. The iShares MSCI Investable Market Index fund (THD) is one of them. Two other options, (although not ETF funds) for US investors are the Thai Fund Inc. (NYSE: TTF) and the Thai Capital Fund Inc. (AMEX: TF.)

The iShares MSCI Thailand Investable Market Index Fund seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance, before fees and expenses, of the MSCI Thailand Investable Market Index.

    Indonesia ETF: Coming Soon?

indonesia etf Indonesia ETFIt looks as if an Indonesia ETF does not yet exist. Although Indonesia has yet to get its own exchange traded fund (ETF), an alternative would be its closed-end fund (CEF) by the name of Indonesia Fund(IF).

    According to Yahoo.com:

“Indonesia Fund, Inc. is a closed-ended equity mutual fund launched by Credit Suisse Asset Management, LLC. It is managed by Credit Suisse Asset Management Limited (Australia). The fund invests in the public equity markets of Indonesia. It makes its investments across diversified sectors. The fund primarily invests in equity securities issued by Indonesian companies across all market capitalizations. It employs a bottom-up stock selection process to create its portfolio, focusing on global and local political, economic, and industry trends. The fund benchmarks the performance of its portfolio against the Morgan Stanley Capital International Indonesia Index. It was formed on March 9, 1990 and is domiciled in the United States.”

Chart for Indonesia Fund Inc. (IF)

We will have to see how the country recovers as it continues to move on from the devastating tsunami of December 2004 that effected every part of its economy.

According to the food and agriculture organization of the United Nations:

“… Economic losses from the earthquake and resultant tsunami were severe, particularly on the West Coast. Agriculture and small traders were seriously affected. Infrastructure to support economic activity (was) devastated and its repair is critical to any rehabiliation effort. Current estimates indicate that as many as 92,000 farms and small enterprises (were) partially or wholly destroyed. Prior to the disaster, these enterprises provided employment for approximately 160,000 people.”

United States ETF: IYY and VTI

United States ETFTwo options for US investors who would like to invest in the US Market via United States ETFs are the Dow Jones U.S. Index Fund (IYY) and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI).

Here is a graph comparison of their performance over the last year. As you can see, their performance is nearly identical (as should be expected.)

Chart for iShares Dow Jones U.S. Index (IYY)

Like other single-country ETFs, these two funds are a perfect example of how an investor could invest in a large number of sectors of their target country by buying shares in one of these ETFs.

If you would like more fund information you may find a prospectus on the iShares website. Here are the fund fact pages for IYY and VTI provided by iShares and Vanguard, respectively.

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games & Hedge Fund Events

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, 2008 Games in Beijing, 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Beijing 2008 Olympic GameI’ve been watching the Olympics in Beijing this week between consulting meetings and blogging and the number of cultures which all come together for the games in Beijing is impressive. It is truly unique and inspiring.

Watching the Beijing Olympic Games has inspired me to get my ducks in a row and schedule the first series of Hedge Fund Group (HFG) events. I met with a group today over lunch who will be helping me organize and market these to the industry and I hope we can make it valuable to all who attend. These quarterly Hedge Fund Group (HFG) events will be held in Boston and New York (not Beijing, yet).

To begin with these will be relatively low key, meet-and-great cocktail hour platforms for networking. If you would like to be involved in helping choose a location, market the event through your website or invite all the members of your firm please send us an email at Richard@HedgeFundGroup.org and let us know how you would like to get involved. Official event dates will be published both here and on http://HedgeFundGroup.org.

Financial Advisor vs. Family Office Marketing

Financial Advisor Marketing, Marketing to Financial AdvisorsToday I received this question from a New York based hedge fund marketer.

Question:When marketing to financial advisors for your hedge fund, what necessary steps do you need to take dealing with these guys? Is it any different that dealing with family offices?

Answer: Marketing to financial advisors is much different than marketing to single and multi-family offices. Here are the main differences between the two that I have noticed:

    • Family ffices have more established due diligence procedures, often involving consultants or internal analysts which do nothing but look at hedge funds or alternative investment products.
    • In my experience financial advisors seem much more sensitive and motivated by how they will earn a commission or income from the transaction whereas many family offices charge rich enoughfees that this is less of an issue.
    • While some financial advisors may take 16-24 months to really get “on board” with a relevant hedge fund manager, understand your investment process and possibly invest most will come to terms a bit before then. Family offices on the other hand often take 18-24 months just to complete theirdue diligence and committee meetings, it is a very long sales process.
    • Both family offices and financial advisors require genuine relationship-building efforts and tenacity
    • Financial advisors have lower minimum asset levels for what they will consider investing. 90% of family offices only seriously consider investing in hedge funds with at least $75M-$100M, and many require $250-$300M or even $1B in assets under management.
    • Family offices are more tight lipped. It will take more effort to develop a relationship, meet in person and get clear feedback on why or why a hedge fund is a good fit for what they are looking for.
    • Family offices are harder to identify in the first place. Financial advisors are easier to find, there are more of them and they advertise more openly. Some family offices advertise but many stay below the radar and some purposefully don’t even have a website.
    • While family offices service to high net worth investors almost exclusively many financial advisors work with a broad spectrum of client types – this might require more caution by them and your fund in marketing products to them. It might also mean sorting through more financial advisors to find one with several HNW clients.
    • From a legal standpoint there may be other precautions your fund should take but I am not a legal expert so I can’t provide any guidance within that space.

What are Hedge Funds?I was recently doing some research and wanted to find a good resource to help you as a financial planner know what a Hedge Fund does and how it is structured. When I was searching I found this great Hedge Fund Video by Mike Gasior that talks about what a Hedge Fund is. Enjoy.

If you know of any other great videos that cover topics like wealth management, private banking, personal financial planning, retirement planning, etf funds or mutual funds I would love to share them with the Financial Planner Alliance community. Due Diligence Process Tips by Experts

Due Diligence Process Due Dilligence ProcessA panel of hedge fund industry experts gathered at Bloomberg to discuss hedge fund due diligence and educate hedge fund investors on lesser-known difficulties. Wintner advocates for choosing seasoned hedge fund managers and thoroughly examining the manager’s past strategies and experiences. He lists important questions to ask when considering a hedge fund manager. The panel discusses operations due diligence, an area that many investors neglect but are critical for hedge fund investors. Another aspect discussed is a thorough method of conducting a background check.
