Does Your Emerging Small Business Have a Problem with Sales?

Sales is a very particular type of job. Either you love to do it, or you hate it. For many people there is just no in-between. Owners of emerging small businesses face a problem if they are in the latter category. Many consider hiring salespeople to do the job for them, but this is a difficult thing to do. Excellent salespeople cost a lot. Poor sales people cost very little, but often don’t justify even that expense. Those you can hire on commission only are usually the worst of the lot, so there is no saving grace there. What is a small business person to do?
If you hate to sell, you should indeed hire a salesperson, but in order to find the right one, be sure you can answer these questions:
What background knowledge does this person need?
How will you educate him or her accordingly?
Can you convince the job applicant that there is money to be made?
What is your typical sales pitch like and how would you like to see it improve?
Answering these questions will help you clarify what exactly you need in a sales person and also help you interview effectively for the position. Having done a little thought beforehand, you will, hopefully, find the perfect employee.
