If you are a business major and need a job while you are in college—either to build your resume or simply for the cash, you can make a good start for yourself doing admin assist work. This type of work will help you get good references, which are crucial for your future business career.
But administrative assistants do a very different job from their bosses, and just because you are a business major, that is no guarantee that you will excel at assistive work. So stay alert and remember to never stop learning on the job. In addition, take the following tips:
- Become familiar with the company team. You must have a chance to sit down with the managers and other assistants that work together and find out the needs of the company, what their expectations are of you, and what you can expect of them.
- Become familiar with the industry. Even if this is not your dream job in your dream company, and even if you are simply thinking of it as a space-filler until you graduate, act like it is everything to you. Investigate the company, learn about it, and ask questions. Your interest will gain you respect.
Set goals. Even though you are not the manager, you can still set goals for yourself that include increasing efficiency and performing tasks better. As you improve, the changes will be noted.
