Selling Small Business Products with Smooth Talk

You have got to talk banks into loaning you money, talk customers into giving your products a try, and talk suppliers into giving  you credit. So what are the secrets to getting people to listen when you talk? There are three essential things you must do, and we call them the 3 P’s:

  1. Always prepare. When you have a presentation or sales pitch, it should have been well practiced ahead of time. You need to know all the details about your product and also be able to present your own story well. You should have concise pitches that explain who you are and why you are in this business. You should have prepared arguments for those who may claim your product isn’t unique or useful enough. Preparation is key.
  2. Get your presentation right. Preparation is certainly part of this, but a presentation should be more than just talk. If you have diagrams, powerpoint slides, or other visual aids, be sure to have them on hand and utilize them well. Dress appropriately and generally create an irresistible picture with your presentation.
  3. Have passion! If you are selling something you don’t really care about, it will show. You need to be enthused about your product and eager to demonstrate it. If you are not feeling particularly passionate that day, just fake it until you make it! That feeling of passion and excitement must come through to make the sale.
