Non Customer Service Jobs
While many customer service jobs focus very obviously on providing customers with an excellent experience, the necessity to do so exists in other positions and is often ignored to the detriment of that business.
Take Bank of America- banks these days are getting pummeled with criticisms, from over leveraging to becoming enormously ill-managed conglomerates that have forgotten the little guy, their customer.
This, although an admittedly minor issue a blogger cites on a recent Thompson Reuters blog, is just that to the higher powers at B of A. It’s a MAJOR indication of the overall approach and lack of concern to going above and beyond for customers.
Stamps: the little nuance that gave an extra oomph to an ATM visit back when Bank of America was still Fleet. As the blogger remembers, it was a simple, appreciated added convenience, that while was not a necessity, was a little thing that was very much missed after the take over.
For whatever reason Bank of America had eliminated its postage feature, it certainly doesn’t speak to its concern for retaining little perks of the experience and providing new customers with an extra service other banks did.
Now, not to say this single-handedly spun the opaque web of toxic assets embedded in Merrill Lynch’s books that would come to haunt Bank of America, but perhaps it’s indicative of a skewed focus. The big, hubris and panic induced move took precedence over improvements at every level, included the ones that directly benefit the customers- the very people who contribute to keeping the bank well- capitalized.
Bottom line- While growth and overall business objectives are certainly a critical part of strategy and focus, the nuances matter just as much if not more, as loyal customers are the solid foundation on which a great business empire stands.
