How to Address Small Business Matters With a Partner

start small business 150x150 How to Address Small Business Matters With a PartnerIf you are planning to start a small business with a partner, there are a lot of considerations you may want to take into account first. It is a wonderful idea to embark upon this adventure with someone else, especially if the two of you each bring different skills to the table. But business can get tense and money can be an issue. It would be a shame to let a business partnership come between two friends. So take this advice for a successful partnership:

  • Define your mission: it is essential that you and your partner agree on why you are in business, what you hope to get out of it, what you hope to offer the community, and what market you are interested in tapping.
  • Address each partner’s expectations: everyone has his or her own reasons for getting into the business. For one it may be the money, but other partners may be seeking a fun retirement project, experience in the world of business, bragging rights, or a chance to network. Make sure that each partner voices his or her expectations and vision before beginning the project.
  • Employ each partner’s greatest strengths. It would be foolish to assign tasks randomly or to base each partner’s tasks on chances for “learning.” Tasks should be assigned based on each partner’s abilities and expertise. Opportunities for branching into new fields within the business will surely arise as the business evolves, but when you are starting out, be sure to utilize each partner according to his or her best expertise.
