Give Great Press Interviews for Your Own Small Business—3 Tips
If your business utilizes the media for outreach, you should know that giving an interview to the press is very different from distributing a press release. There is a great deal of preparation that is necessary to make an interview successful and to avoid any gaffes. Let’s take a look at three important factors to consider:
- Find out the deadline. When you know the reporter’s deadline, you can schedule the interview with plenty of time both to prepare and to enable him or her to write the piece. That will result in the best outcome overall.
- Inquire as to what type of interview is desired. Many interviews will be conducted over the phone, or even through email, but others will be videotaped or photographed. Find out what the reporter wants before agreeing to an interview.
- Always ask if the interview is live. If it is live on television or radio, ask how long it is expected to be. If the interview is only two minutes long, you will have to rush to make sure that you get your message out there. You will also have to rehearse what you want to say, as there will be no chance for a retake.
