Thinking of starting a retail business? It’s a great idea to go into business for yourself. Until you do it, you never truly understand the world of commerce. But there are also a lot of good reasons not to do it. There is the financial risk, the long hours, and the need it has for your undivided attention. Lets examine the reasons why some would-be entrepreneurs decide in the end not to start a business. It could help you decide if these are obstacles you think you can overcome.

  1. Not enough money. Start-up capital is necessary, and borrowing it requires a great deal of commitment. Are you ready for the commitment? Will you follow through? You can overcome the fear of a lack of money by making a very specific business plan that explains every aspect of your business and its finances.
  2. Not enough security. In order to start a new business, you are going to have to quit your job. That means giving up the security that a full time job offers you. For some folks, this risk is just too great. Having to pay for your own benefits and set your own hours can be expensive and difficult. To overcome this problem, don’t quit your day job at first. Run your retail business part time, or hire an employee.
  3. Too much competition. Some folks love competition and strive to do better than those who came before. Others, however, do not have any new ideas to set their businesses apart. If you don’t have an idea that is newer, faster, or better than the others currently available, brainstorm until you do. You can’t succeed by providing more of the same.
  4. Finally, some people don’t know what sort of business to start. If you want to be your own boss but don’t know where to begin, research current trends to find something successful that fits within your range of interests.
