Definition of Ethical in Business

Definition of Ethical in BusinessEvery society and every culture has its own definition of business ethics. Although the word ethics itself is very broad, there will always be unwritten rules on how businesses should be done in every place. Even illegal businesses and the crime rings underworld have a set of rules of conduct that governs them on how they do business. The difference between the law and ethics is that the law is written and violations will have corresponding punishments. Violations of ethics do not have punishments because ethics is not the law.
Since business ethics relies so much on the social mindset, how you practice and what to follow will greatly depend on your own moral code. This is a risky thing to violate especially in small towns where all people know each other. To some people, it might be wrong to open shop when there is a wake or funeral. To you, it may be an opportunity for business. Keep in mind that even if there are no associated punishments on these kinds of violations, the people themselves-your customers-will be your judge.

Always remember that when it comes to business ethics, what matters is not what makes you proud. Keep in mind that your business depends on your customers. What matters is what makes them proud and the actions you do that do not offend them. Sometimes, your own dignity might be at stake. Your own principles might be trampled upon. Keep in mind that these are all part of business because your business is you.
