Create a Green Small Business Data Center
When trying to “green” your business, the process can be confusing and frustrating. Sometimes the expense of switching your business services and products over to more environmentally sustaining ones is costly, and sometimes it is simply cost prohibitive. Then there are the rare instances when simplifying actually means just that—cutting back in such a way that you actually save money. Don’t you wish every “greening” project were like that?
In an attempt to keep things simple and try to help green businesses one by one, we offer you four tips on greening your data center:
- First of all, use the power management you already have in your hardware system. Most desktop computers refrain from utilizing the power management they already have installed. No need to buy anything fancy. Just utilize what is being underused to begin with.
- Think about hot and cool aisles. Sealing off hot aisles can preserve the cool temperature of other aisles. The small expense involved in this can save many many times that in the long run. It is a simple solution to what could become a huge temperature-control issue.
- Make sure your thermostat is located in the proper location. Having it wrongly placed in the data center can give you inaccurate readings.
- By utilizing virtualization, you can get more data into less floor space. Virtualization can be an excellent tool for reducing and simplifying your system.
