It may even be a major change that requires re-training. This could be cause for alarm in many offices where employees are not prepared for change, but if you set up the office with the understanding that procedures are both important and subject to change, you will get less resistance when the time for change approaches.

No employee likes to be re-trained to do something he or she has already been doing for some time. But procedures do have to change due to new laws being passed, a change in the customer base, or financial pitfalls. To ensure that employees don’t balk at the need for change, keep morale high.

  • When correcting an employees’ work, always be sure to emphasize the things they did right as well as those that are not working for you.
  • Offer professional development opportunities on a regular basis. This way, employees will be used to the process of being trained and retrained.
  • Ask for employee input. If employees can provide a good reason to avoid the change, you should be open to it. But if their suggestions don’t solve the problem, this will help them see the necessity for the change.
