You have got to know if this person is going to excel for find excuses to avoid work. There are so many things you have got to know before hiring this assistant, that it can be paralyzing. But not having an assistant is even worse. So here are a few guidelines to help you understand what a good administrative assistant should be doing. Just ask the job applicant what he or she needs to do to get organized and stay that way, and if they cite the points below, you know you’ve got a winner.

  • First of all, your admin assist should have questions for the team. He or she should be asking how they are expected to contribute, what needs to be done differently, and what are the typical procedures for answering telephones, emails, etc.
  • Next, your assistant should set goals. He or she is not simply there to take orders from you. If the two of you have mutually agreed upon goals for performance, then your assistant can contribute meaningfully to the work.
  • Finally, your admin assist should have an appropriate office area. Even if it is just a desk or a cubicle, your assistant needs tools like a telephone, computer, message pad, etc. These are the tools of the trade, and it is your job to provide them, but it is the assistant’s job to know if anything is missing and inform you.
